Weekend To Do: Super snack!

I know I said I would offer a suggestion for what to each weekend, but who am I kidding? Saturday’s poised to be a rainout, and come Sunday some of us will be elbow-deep in the cheese balls at a Super Bowl party.

Oh, that’s just me?

What, your Super Bowl party won't have zip lines? (AP)

If you will be doing some Super Bowl snacking, here are a few tips:

Making chili? Swap the ground beef for ground turkey and lean ground sirloin and you won’t sacrifice flavor.

Skip the dips made with mayonnaise or other creamy ingredients and opt for salsa, hummus, or a dip of white beans with onion, garlic and Parmesan cheese (courtesy Cooking Light website).

Veggies instead of chips or crackers. If you have to have chips, pick the more nutritious version.

Want wings? Grill them instead of frying. Marinate for an hour in the fridge with a mixture that is more savory (or spicy) than sweet.

Need bacon? Don’t go without, just use half of what the recipe calls for — the flavor will still be there.

Hungry for numbers?

Here are some stats to chew on, courtesy of the Houston Chronicle:

1,200: Average number of calories consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s the second largest day for U.S. food consumption. You can guess what the first is.

1.25 billion: The number of chicken wings Americans are expected to eat Sunday, according to the U.S. National Chicken Council.

325 million: Gallons of beer to be consumed.

What about exercise?

Go do some wind sprints instead of watching the commercials. Riiiiiight. Although this snack-to-exercise equivalency gallery via The Washington Post will make you want to run laps until you pass out.

And if you still feel the need to work off these calories, hold a contest for best end-zone celebration. And one for best Madonna impersonation.

And then remember Monday, it’s back to the grind.
